San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Suicide Deterrent Project, San Diego County, CA
Located on State Routes 5 and 75 in San Diego County, this project entails the design and installation of a vertical suicide deterrent barrier affixed to the exterior of the existing bridge railing. The project also includes the design and upgrade of an existing closed-circuit television system, with new cameras installed to provide complete monitoring coverage of the bridge. To support the project, CL Survey provided research, field surveying, data processing, and data management in accordance with Caltrans standards. CL Survey established four project control points on the bridge and performed a detailed topographic survey using mobile laser scanning and mapping technologies. The mobile scanning captured dense, high-resolution 3D data of the bridge deck, approach slab, overhangs, railings, and other structural features, creating a comprehensive point cloud to support design and engineering. The mobile scan was supplemented with conventional surveying methods to establish and verify project control, collect critical features, and ensure the accuracy and completeness of the final survey data. The resulting topographic mapping supported the accurate design and placement of the deterrent system, maintenance walkways, CCTV infrastructure, and related improvements.
